Here we are in week 9 of the college football season already. This week there are some great games on tap and several clashes between Top 25 teams. I've got a funny feeling (no it wasn't the pepperoni pizza from last night) about a few upsets this week so without further ado......... Here are my picks for this week.
FLAME PICKS EM Week 9 record: 13-7 :-(
The #1 Longhorns have proven they belong at the top the past two weeks That shouldn't change this week at home in what should be the most entertaining game of the weekend to watch. Give me the remote, my ice cold Rolling Rock and a large submarine sandwhich and I'm good for the afternoon.
I've gone back and forth on this one. Alabama just too strong and Tennessee too inconsistent. Tennessee's 12th man sure to be into this game. Bama better come prepared to play 40 minutes this weekend. Close road win for the Tide.
Two weeks ago I'd have said Penn State in a cakewalk. The Buckeyes look like they are starting to peak at just the right time. This game could go either way but I still like PSU in this one. Field goal probably wins this game.
Kansas State has shown they can beat up on the little guys but has lost to every quality opponent they've played this year. This week is no different. Sooners big in this one.
The Gators seem to be playing some good football right now and now that Kentucky has stepped up in competition, they are finding it a little tougher now. I comfortably like Florida at home in this one.
Arizona may be the surprise of the PAC 10. They've won 3 out of their last 4 games with that one loss a 1 point setback to Stanford. They are also at home this week. Even so, the Trojans are head and shoulders above the rest of the conference (yes, Oregon State was a fluke loss) and they will prove it on the road this week.
7. Oklahoma State @ Texas - Predicted above. Texas wins.
Upset special this week. Texas Tech steps up in class this week on the road and they find it tough sledding. The Red Raiders fall from the unbeaten ranks against the Jayhawks. This is the first team Tech has played in the Top 45 (cbssportsline 120) this year and they struggled against a weak Texas A&M team a week ago. Jayhawks win this one.
Classic SEC battle between two proud programs. The chatter ought to be good on the cbssportsline message board on this one. I've said LSU has been over-rated this season and I believe it will show in this game. Georgia in a close battle.
10. Ohio State vs Penn State Predicted above - Penn State wins.
11. LSU vs Georgia Predicted above - Georgia wins.
12. Utah IDLE
Ok... call me crazy here. Just what would be needed to throw the whole BCS Mess conversation into a tizzy. Boise State could be ripe for the picking on the road in a key conference game against San Jose State, who currently sits atop the WAC standings with a 3-0 conference record. I smell an upset. Spartans in a wild one.
This feels like a trap game to me but I think the Bulls will prevail on the road. USF has some impressive wins thus far with their lone loss being to Pitt. Louisville's schedule is more suspect. USF wins.
The question here isn't if but by how much. Horned Frogs at home are all fired up after the big win against Brigham's Boys. TCU gets to play their second and third stringers and win going away.
The good news is Colorado plays Texas A&M next Saturday. The bad news is they are on the road to play Missouri after the Tigers have lost two in a row. Don't mess with an angry Tiger. This will be ugly for Colorado as they will be "CHASEd" out of the stadium.
The Panthers appear to peaking at just the right time and that is bad news for Rutgers who peaked last season. Pitt at home wins easily.
BYU gets back on track with a home win against the Runnin Rebels.
19. Kansas vs Texas Tech Predicted above - Kansas wins.
Yours truly is making the 5 hour journey to Muncie Indiana tomorrow and will be in the stands at Scheumann Stadium to watch the Cardinals play Eastern. I don't want to put any additional pressure on the Cardinals but I have skin in the game here so they'd better win. Ball State needs to win impressively if they want to keep their slim BCS hopes alive. Cardinals easily win this against the bottom of the MAC and go to 8-0.
This has the possibility of being one of the better games. Georgia Tech is 3 points shy of being undefeated this season. Virginia has looked like world beaters the last 3 games after a shakey start. Something has to give. I don't have a coin to toss so I'll go with the Yellow Jackets based on home field advantage.
Let me see. UCF has two wins. One over a Division 1AA team and SMU, a Division 1AA wanna be. Tulsa hangs 60-70 points on teams with incredible consistency. I think I'll take Tulsa for 100, Alex.
Lots of folks would go with the Tar Heels on this one and you could make a case for that however, the Eagles have but one loss and that was a 3 point defeat to Georgia Tech who, as I said above, is also nearly undefeated. I think BC has been underrated this season up to now and is just coming into their own. UNC on the other hand appears to be inconsistent in their play. Eagles soar on the road.
Don't ask me why. It's just a feeling.
Purdue is due! Unfortunately, they don't play Indiana until the last game of the season. Minnesota is 6-1 and ranked in the Top 25. Saturday, they will show the Boilers why.
